Empathise and engage

If there’s one thing we’ve learned makes better buildings, it’s empathy. Architecture never happens in isolation—and simply by being interested and engaged, we’ve found it’s possible to open up the conversations that connect a scheme to its clients and community.

Weconstraints

We believe that the more constraints there are, the better the architecture. If there aren’t any constraints, we create them. Challenging sites, existing buildings and complex briefs almost always present incredible opportunities for great design.

Passive future

To limit our environmental impact, we start with what is already there. By manipulating the form and fabric of a building—whether new or existing—we can work with the existing conditions of topography, light and orientation, and harness the natural energy sources offered by air, ground and water.

Social detail

If a site’s constraints guide the bigger design decisions, then it’s empathy that informs the smaller, social details. These details frame the human narratives that aren’t included in the brief, anticipating specific moments in the users’ lives.

Mud on our boots

Good architecture is as much about what happens on the building site as it is about what’s on the drawing board. By working alongside contractors as well as clients we can ring-fence the ideas and details that matter, championing quality and sustainability throughout construction.

A new masterplan for Brooklands Park on the South Coast of England regenerates and transforms the park into a science and discovery destination, following the principles of learning, inclusivity and wellbeing.

Brooklands Park sits between the coastal towns of Worthing and Lancing and acts as a green pathway from the seafront to the South Downs. In the 1960s and 70s, multiple concessions and attractions including a paddling pool, model train line and mini golf course, brought many locals and tourists to the area. However, sections of the park fell into disrepair over the years, to which we responded with a proposal to re-imagine the park as a natural science destination.

At the heart of the project sits a café and visitor centre with a strong educational focus on subjects including science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The new masterplan also encompasses viewing platforms, improved pathways, re-landscaped sensory gardens, and play zones. When completed, the centre will act as both a gateway from the park’s east entrance and a focal point from the south, to attract visitors from the neighbouring and wider communities.

The design is inclusive and aims to facilitate social and physical wellbeing, providing a variety of flexible and comfortable social spaces, and the capacity to be used for larger groups. The new hub will be equipped with internal and external seating space, a café, toilets with baby changing facilities, compliant toilets and a changing place. The hub will serve as a semi-autonomous building, utilising sustainable resources and technology.
