If there’s one thing we’ve learned makes better buildings, it’s empathy. Architecture never happens in isolation—and simply by being interested and engaged, we’ve found it’s possible to open up the conversations that connect a scheme to its clients and community.

We believe that the more constraints there are, the better the architecture. If there aren’t any constraints, we create them. Challenging sites, existing buildings and complex briefs almost always present incredible opportunities for great design.

To limit our environmental impact, we start with what is already there. By manipulating the form and fabric of a building—whether new or existing—we can work with the existing conditions of topography, light and orientation, and harness the natural energy sources offered by air, ground and water.

If a site’s constraints guide the bigger design decisions, then it’s empathy that informs the smaller, social details. These details frame the human narratives that aren’t included in the brief, anticipating specific moments in the users’ lives.

Good architecture is as much about what happens on the building site as it is about what’s on the drawing board. By working alongside contractors as well as clients we can ring-fence the ideas and details that matter, championing quality and sustainability throughout construction.

Curl la Tourelle Head Architecture is now Baumshlager Eberle Architects London, joining a group of 17 offices across Europe.

Our office is located in the Shakespeare Tower in the Barbican – a significant post-war urban ensemble in London. Here, architecture, culture, housing, and public space converge in a unique way. This environment significantly shapes our thinking on urban living, sustainability, the adaptive reuse of existing buildings, and public architecture.

We work on projects in many sectors, including healthcare, education, housing, mixed-use developments, and public works projects. We are particularly interested in socially responsible and environmentally conscious architecture. Our recent projects include the completion of a special needs school for Derbyshire Council, which won both the RIBA National Award 2024 and the Civic Trust National Award. In addition, a mixed-use project in Bromley, London, recently received full planning permission. This project comprises 109 apartments, 34 units for seniors, and commercial space for local start-ups.

Our team of nine architects develops sustainable and practical projects in creative dialogue with clients, specialist planners, contractors, and local communities. Our goal is to translate visions into appropriate, innovative, and livable buildings – through an integrated and site-specific planning approach.

Each project develops a customized solution. Continuous attention to detail ensures maximum reliability in all project phases. Insights gained from completed projects enrich new endeavors. The result is high-performance buildings of the highest quality and long-term added value.
