Building King's Cross
Building King's Cross has been prepared as a first draft of a fifth edition of Details, a project edited by Wayne Head and circulated in art book shops such as the Whitechapel Gallery, RIBA Book Shop, The Serpentine Gallery, and, internationally, the Printed Matter book shop New York. The group also hold regular talks about the editions, most recently including the RIBA bookshop, the Focal Point Gallery Southend and various schools of architecture across the UK.
Many of the projects in this edition were developed by King's Cross Central Limited Partnership during the ongoing regeneration of King's Cross. We recognise Argent's role directly in the development of these projects, from industrial heritage to modern living.
King's Cross is an area of London which has seen an overhaul of regenerative development over the last decade. Located off the Regent's Canal, this once vital industrial hub was left derelict and wild from the free forces of rave culture and the squat movement in the 1980s. Although physical remnants of its liberal past have been erased, there is proof of its heritage everywhere in the sensitive treatment of industrial buildings.
The recent urban development has assured the site's legacy of building craftsmanship through robust design and delicate adaptations of historic spaces. London has never before seen urban development of this scale, and with it, preserved such an area of historic urban fabric. In this volume of DETAILS, we take a look at the construction and fabrication of some of the most iconic and exclusive landmarks of King's Cross. Broken-down into case-study drawings we look at what makes an enduring detail.
